The Puzzle of Life
Have you ever sat down with a puzzle, excited to see the picture come together, only to feel frustrated when certain pieces just don’t seem to fit? You try one spot, then another, turning the piece every which way, but nothing makes sense—until, finally, you see where it belongs. Life often feels the same way. We hold pieces of our story, but without the full picture, we wonder if things will ever come together.
Jeremiah 29:11 is one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, yet it's also one of the most misunderstood. Many cling to it as a promise that life will be smooth, but the context tells a deeper story—one of exile, waiting, and learning to trust God's unseen hand.
Today, let's explore what it truly means to believe that God knows the plans He has for you, especially when those plans don’t look the way you expected.
God’s Promise in Exile
Jeremiah wrote these words to the Israelites while they were in Babylonian captivity. They had lost everything—home, temple, land, and national identity. Many felt abandoned by God. In their distress, false prophets were spreading lies, telling them that deliverance would come quickly. But Jeremiah brought a different word: Settle in. Build homes. Plant gardens. Seek the welfare of the city where you are. (Jeremiah 29:5-7). In other words, This season will last longer than you expect.
Imagine their disappointment. They wanted immediate rescue, but God’s plan involved 70 years of waiting. And yet, in the midst of this exile, God made a profound promise: I have plans for you. Not just any plans—plans for good and not evil, for a future and a hope.
Sometimes, we expect God to work on our timeline. We want the miracle today, the breakthrough now. But God's wisdom is greater than ours. Just as He had a purpose in Israel’s waiting, He has a purpose in our seasons of delay. What if the waiting isn’t a punishment, but preparation?
Trusting When You Don’t See the Full Picture
Have you ever felt like God’s plan for your life is taking too long? Maybe you've prayed for healing, restoration, or clarity, but all you hear is silence. In those moments, the enemy whispers, God has forgotten you. But the truth is, God's silence is not His absence.
A few years ago, I (Adam) found myself in a season where nothing made sense. As a single father, I was juggling responsibilities, trying to provide for my child, and at the same time, feeling called to something greater. Doors kept closing, opportunities seemed scarce, and I began to question if I was on the right path.
Then, one day, I looked back at the previous year and realized—every "no" had led me to a better "yes." Every closed door had protected me from something that wasn’t right for me. I hadn’t seen the full picture, but God had. He was weaving something beautiful behind the scenes, even when I felt lost in the waiting.
Just because you don’t see God working doesn’t mean He isn’t. Just because life feels uncertain doesn’t mean your future is uncertain in His hands.
God’s Plans Are Always for Your Good
It’s important to note that good in God’s eyes doesn’t always mean easy in ours. The Israelites had to endure 70 years in Babylon, but God's plan was still good. Joseph was betrayed, sold into slavery, and imprisoned before he was raised to power. Paul endured shipwrecks, beatings, and imprisonments while fulfilling his calling. God's definition of good is often different than ours.
Romans 8:28 reminds us, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose."
Sometimes, the job loss is the doorway to something better. Sometimes, the heartbreak is God’s protection from something that would have destroyed you. Sometimes, the waiting is growing something in you that success never could.
If God’s plans for you are truly for your welfare and not for evil, then you can trust that even the hard seasons are not wasted. He is the Master Weaver, creating a tapestry of grace with every thread of your story.
How to Walk in This Truth
Shift Your Perspective on Waiting – Instead of seeing delays as obstacles, see them as divine appointments. What is God teaching you in this season?
Remind Yourself of His Faithfulness – Keep a journal of answered prayers. When doubt creeps in, look back at how He has come through before.
Surrender Your Timeline – God is not bound by your deadlines. Trust that His timing is perfect, even when it doesn’t align with yours.
Seek God’s Presence, Not Just His Plans – Sometimes we want to know the plan more than we want to know the Planner. Make intimacy with Him your priority.
Let Go and Trust
Right now, God is looking at the full puzzle of your life. He sees the edges, the corners, and the missing pieces. He knows exactly where each one fits. Will you trust Him even when you can’t see the final picture?
What if you stopped striving to control every piece and instead surrendered them into His hands? What if the peace you're searching for isn't found in understanding the plan, but in trusting the One who holds it?
Let’s Close in a Prayer…
Heavenly Father, thank You for knowing the plans You have for us, even when we don’t understand them. In seasons of waiting, help us to trust You. In times of confusion, remind us of Your faithfulness. Let us walk in the confidence that Your plans are always for our good and Your glory. We surrender our timeline to You, Lord. Strengthen our hearts to trust when we cannot see. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
