January 13: God is All-Knowing
Psalm 139:1-6 (ESV)
"O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it."
The Wonder of Being Fully Known
Imagine standing on a mountain ridge, overlooking a vast expanse of wilderness. You can see the forest below, its trees swaying in the breeze, but the countless paths hidden within remain a mystery to you. Now picture God, not just surveying the landscape but intimately aware of every trail, every creature, every leaf—knowing each detail down to its very core. This is how David describes God’s knowledge of us in Psalm 139:1-6. God doesn’t just see us; He knows us—completely, intricately, and personally.
Why does this matter? Because many of us live with a fear of being truly known. We’re haunted by the thought that if people saw the real us—the mistakes, the doubts, the flaws—they would turn away. But here’s the life-changing truth: God sees every part of you, and He still chooses to love you.
Today, let’s explore the depths of God’s omniscience and how it transforms the way we view ourselves and our relationship with Him.
The Extent of God’s Knowledge
David begins Psalm 139 with awe, declaring, “O Lord, you have searched me and known me!” The Hebrew word for “search” (chaqar) implies a thorough and intentional examination. God’s knowledge isn’t superficial or distant; it’s profound and intimate.
God Knows Our Actions: David writes, “You know when I sit down and when I rise up” (v. 2). From the mundane to the monumental, nothing escapes God’s notice.
God Knows Our Thoughts: “You discern my thoughts from afar” (v. 2). Even before we articulate our feelings or ideas, God knows them completely.
God Knows Our Words: “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether” (v. 4). Every conversation, every prayer, every unspoken cry—He understands them all.
This level of knowledge is beyond human comprehension. David concludes, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it” (v. 6). God’s omniscience isn’t just about information; it’s about relationship. He knows us because He loves us.
The Comfort of God’s Knowledge
For some, the idea of being fully known might feel unsettling. After all, wouldn’t it mean that God sees our failures, our sins, and our deepest insecurities? Yes, He does—and yet, He doesn’t turn away. Instead, He draws closer.
Consider this: God’s knowledge of us doesn’t lead to condemnation but to compassion. In Psalm 103:14, David writes, “For he knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust.” God’s omniscience is paired with His grace, allowing us to approach Him without fear.
I remember a time in my life when this truth became my anchor. I had just come out of a relationship I thought would last forever. The pain, uncertainty, and confusion felt like too much to handle. Nights were the hardest, filled with questions that had no answers. Had I failed? Was I not enough? Where had I gone wrong? In that season, Psalm 139 reminded me that even in my brokenness, God saw me fully. He knew the depths of my pain, the questions I was afraid to voice, and the doubts that kept me awake. And yet, He stayed. Day by day, I found solace in the strength He provided. His Word became my refuge, and His presence brought clarity when the path forward seemed impossible to discern. Knowing that God’s knowledge of me was paired with His love gave me the courage to trust Him again.
Living in Light of God’s Knowledge
How should we respond to a God who knows us so completely?
1. Embrace Vulnerability
Stop hiding from God. He already knows your fears, your doubts, and your failures. When we bring these to Him in prayer, we experience His grace and healing. Psalm 34:18 reminds us, “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”
Action Step: Spend time journaling your honest thoughts and feelings to God. Lay your heart bare before Him, trusting in His love.
2. Rest in His Care
God’s knowledge isn’t passive; it’s active. David says, “You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me” (v. 5). God’s omniscience is a source of protection and provision. He knows what we need before we ask.
Action Step: Reflect on a time when God’s provision or guidance was evident in your life. Thank Him for His faithfulness.
3. Live Authentically
If God fully knows and fully loves us, we no longer need to strive for approval from others. We are free to live authentically, grounded in His love.
Action Step: Identify one area of your life where you’ve been seeking validation from others. Surrender it to God, trusting that His approval is enough.
The Freedom of Being Known
That moment when you realize you are fully known and fully loved—it changes everything. The God who formed the cosmos knows your name. The God who spoke galaxies into existence knows your thoughts. The God who holds all things together holds your life in His hands.
This truth invites us to stop striving and start resting in His love. It’s the assurance that we don’t have to be perfect to be accepted; we are already cherished by the One who knows us best.
