January 14th Devotional: God is Sovereign
Daniel 4:34-35 (ESV)
“At the end of the days I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted my eyes to heaven, and my reason returned to me, and I blessed the Most High, and praised and honored him who lives forever, for his dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation; all the inhabitants of the earth are accounted as nothing, and he does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, 'What have you done?”
A Sovereign Hand
Picture this: A mighty king, robed in splendor, standing on his palace rooftop, surveying the vast kingdom that his hands have built. The sun shines on golden towers and bustling streets. He thinks, "This is my doing. My power. My glory." But in a moment, the scene shifts. That same king is on all fours, eating grass like an ox, humbled by the God he dared to defy.
This is the story of Nebuchadnezzar, one of the most powerful rulers in ancient history. His downfall and restoration serve as a vivid reminder of God’s absolute sovereignty—a truth that speaks into the chaos and uncertainties of our lives today. When life feels out of control, when questions abound and answers seem scarce, Daniel 4 invites us to lift our eyes to heaven and trust the One who reigns over all.
Today, we’ll explore what it means to worship a sovereign God, unpacking how His rule shapes our understanding of purpose, humility, and trust.
The God Who Rules All
Nebuchadnezzar’s confession in Daniel 4 is a remarkable acknowledgment of God’s sovereignty. “His dominion is an everlasting dominion, and his kingdom endures from generation to generation” (v. 34). This is not the boast of a man asserting his authority; it is the humbled cry of one who has come face-to-face with the King of kings.
In the ancient world, kings were often seen as semi-divine figures, wielding absolute power. But Nebuchadnezzar’s story flips the script. His temporary insanity was not a random misfortune but a divine intervention designed to reveal the limits of human authority and the infinite scope of God’s rule.
Have you ever felt like your world was spinning out of control? Perhaps it was a health crisis, a financial setback, or the loss of a relationship. In moments like these, we’re tempted to grasp for control, just as Nebuchadnezzar did. Yet Scripture reminds us that God’s sovereignty is not just a theological concept; it’s a deeply personal reality. He rules over kingdoms and galaxies, but He also holds the details of your life in His hands.
Application: Reflect on a time when you felt overwhelmed by circumstances. How did God’s sovereign hand guide you through that season? Spend time meditating on Psalm 46:10: “Be still, and know that I am God.” Let the truth of His dominion bring peace to your heart.
Humility Before the King
Nebuchadnezzar’s journey from arrogance to humility is both sobering and inspiring. Before his transformation, he declared, “Is not this great Babylon, which I have built by my mighty power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” (Daniel 4:30). His words drip with pride. But moments later, God’s judgment falls, and the king’s pride crumbles.
The turning point comes when Nebuchadnezzar lifts his eyes to heaven (v. 34). This simple act of surrender—acknowledging God’s greatness—restores not just his sanity but his soul. It’s a reminder that humility is the posture through which we encounter God’s grace.

It was only when I stopped striving and turned to God in prayer that I experienced His provision and peace.
Application: Are there areas in your life where pride has crept in? Take a moment to lift your eyes to heaven. Confess your need for God’s grace and ask Him to cultivate a spirit of humility in your heart.
Trusting the God Who Does All Things Well
One of the most profound statements in Nebuchadnezzar’s confession is this: “He does according to his will among the host of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth; and none can stay his hand or say to him, ‘What have you done?’” (v. 35). This is a declaration of absolute trust in God’s wisdom and power.
We live in a world that often questions God’s goodness. Why does He allow suffering? Why doesn’t He answer prayers the way we expect? These are valid questions, but Nebuchadnezzar’s story reminds us that God’s ways are higher than our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). His sovereignty doesn’t negate human pain, but it assures us that nothing is wasted. Every trial, every detour, every unanswered prayer is woven into a tapestry of redemption.
There was a time in my life when I wrestled with this truth. After my divorce, I struggled to understand why God allowed my family to fracture. But looking back, I see how He used that season to draw me closer to Him and to shape me into a more compassionate father and servant. God’s sovereignty doesn’t always make sense in the moment, but it is always trustworthy.
Application: What situations in your life feel confusing or unfair? Write them down and commit them to God in prayer, trusting that He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28).
Practical Steps to Embrace God’s Sovereignty
Surrender Daily: Begin each day by declaring God’s rule over your life. Pray, “Lord, I trust You with my plans, my fears, and my desires. Your will be done.”
Rest in His Control: When anxiety creeps in, remind yourself of God’s promises. Memorize verses like Proverbs 3:5-6 to anchor your heart in His faithfulness.
Live with Gratitude: Recognize that every blessing—big or small—is a gift from the sovereign King. Keep a gratitude journal to cultivate a spirit of thanksgiving.
The Sovereign King Who Sees You
That moment when Nebuchadnezzar lifts his eyes to heaven is the moment his story changes. And it’s the moment our stories change too. When we acknowledge God’s sovereignty, we move from striving to surrender, from fear to faith, from chaos to peace.
The truth God is whispering to your heart today is this: “I am sovereign over all things, and I am sovereign over you. Trust Me.”
